Is PAT Testing Important?
"Where there’s blame, there’s a claim" is a more than often well known phrase that can cost companies thousands of pounds. This is why it has become more and more important than ever to make sure that your company is doing all it can to make the everyday workplace safe for you, your staff and members of the public.
If you have had a recent inspection visit from your Health & Safety, Fire Officer or a call from your insurance supplier to renew your policy you may just remember that one of their first questions was whether you have been PAT Tested. If your answer was no then you could possibly be looking at paying more for your insurance or asked to get your workplace tested before your inspection is passed.
Below are just a few other reasons why you should have your Testing carried out:
To fulfil the requirements of The Electricity at Work Regulations
To minimise the risk of fire and injury caused by electrical appliances (Each year about 1000 accidents at work involving electric shocks or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive. About 30 of these are fatal. 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances)
To comply with The Electricity at Work Regulations
Information
Whilst PAT testing is not strictly compulsory, it is generally regarded as being the best way of meeting the electrical regulations that exist to protect employees, customers and tenants.
All portable electrical equipment is subject to getting damaged during use, and this damage could render the equipment dangerous to the user. Without a regular programme of testing and inspection, you have not taken reasonable steps to ensure the safety of users. Without it you could be in a very difficult situation if an electrical accident were to occur.
The legislations of specific relevance to electrical maintenance are:
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
